|HOW TO RENT A FLAT IN LAS PALMAS?|
All the paperwork? Check. Plane ticket? Check. Flat? … Where do I even look for it? As a foreigner, I had no idea where to look for a flat. I didn’t know anybody who would rent flats or any website to look at. So I asked Nika for help.
She sent me few websites: idealista.net, vibbo.com, fotocasa.es, pisocompartido.com, I went through all the advertisements and found a few flats where I could stay. I contacted the owners via e-mail and patiently waited for their reply. In the mean time, I searched through Airbnb, where I usually rent a place to stay when I travel.
How does it work?
Users from all over the world post their flats, rooms, houses, even CASTLES for rent. Customers can rent those places anywhere from a couple of days to even months. Travellers search through the website by entering the details of their desired destination and accommodation. You can filter the results according to:
- Room type: entire place, private room, shared room
- Price: you select your minimum and maximum
- Size: number of bedrooms, bathrooms and beds
- Amenities: WiFi, TV, kitchen, pool, pets
- Property type: apartment, house, bed & breakfast, castle, cave, igloo, boat, airplane, …
- Host language
So, if I go back to the Spanish accommodation-renting websites… Do you think that I got any replies? Well, from all of them (there were around 15), I got one reply. ONE. And of course that only reply was: Sorry, the accommodation is not available anymore. GREAT.
After I realized that I would not have that much luck with the Spanish websites, I decided to book my accommodation via Airbnb. It was the best decision I have ever made. You can instantly see which listings are available for your stay, the price, the location, the reviews about the accommodation and the host (which are the two things that influence my decision) and photos of the accommodation.
Most of the hosts even offer you a weekly or even monthly discount, If you book a place for a longer period of time. In my case, I saved almost 400€ with the monthly discount! I rented a place with a superhost – for that you need to have an account in good standing, and over the past year you must have:
- Hosted at least 10 trips
- Maintained a 90% response rate or higher
- Received a 5-star review at least 80% of the time you’ve been reviewed, as long as at least half of the guests who stayed with you left a review
- Completed each of your confirmed reservations without cancelling.
He even offered to pick me up at the airport (with no additional fee), took me for a coffee to settle into my new hometown for the next 2 months and prepared lunch. The place was amazing, three blocks away from my workplace, 100 m from the beach and it is equipped with everything. For a reasonable price.
I don’t think I will go back to any other accommodation renting websites. I love Airbnb. It did not disappoint me, not once. You can find amazing places for a reasonable price plus, most of the time you get the local experience with it. The hosts always give you tips where to eat, what to see, they even guide you themselves. It is not just an accommodation. It is the whole experience. I love it!
What are your experiences in renting places abroad? I would love to hear about them and feel free to share them with me!
