3 consejos para mejorar la expresión escrita

Tanto si te presentas al examen de B1 o de B2, como si tienes que escribir en inglés en el trabajo, te proponemos 3 consejos para mejorar tu expresión escrita.  Lo principal es que las ideas del texto se transmitan de forma clara. Y que te expreses de manera adecuada y correcta… Y bueno, en inglés, claro… Si se te ha hecho un nudo en la garganta o estás al borde del desmayo  pensando en cómo vas a conseguir todo eso, aquí tienes 3 consejos para mejorar la expresión escrita.

3 consejos para mejorar la expresión escrita: Organiza las ideas con conectores 🔗

Los conectores hacen que la relación entre tus ideas quede clara, y que el texto sea fluido y cómodo de leer.  Muchas veces cuando escribimos en una lengua extranjera estamos tan centrados en qué queremos decir que nos olvidamos de cómo lo decimos. Ya estás a nivel intermedio, así que no te conformes con que tus ideas se entiendan. Esfuérzate por que esté bien expresadas y conectadas entre sí.

Eso sí… asegúrate de que lo estés usando de forma correcta y que encaja bien en la frase en cuestión… ¡y tampoco abuses de los conectores! No se trata de intentar escurrir todos los que puedas para que quede bien claro que los conoces todos, sino de usar los justos y necesarios para dar naturalidad, claridad y facilidad de lectura al texto. (Tanto si tienes un claro caso de “conectoritis aguda” como una carencia grave de conectores, consulta inmediatamente con tu profesor. Ambos problemas tienen cura… Para todo lo demás consulta con tu farmacéutico).

3 consejos para mejorar la expresión escrita: Planea y revisa tus textos 📇🔍

Sobre todo ahora que estás en nivel intermedio y que los textos que escribes son un poco más largos y más complejos, estas dos etapas se vuelven más importantes. Planear te ayudará a generar ideas, estructurar bien el texto y no dejarte nada atrás. Aunque lleve unos minutos, te ahorrará tiempo de redacción y el resultado será de más calidad.

En cuanto a la revisión… seamos sinceros… da pereza. A menudo, una vez has terminado tu texto que tanto esfuerzo te ha costado escribir, lo último que te apetece es volverlo a leer. Sin embargo, si lo haces verás que prácticamente siempre vas a encontrar algo.

Puede que sean fallos graves como estructuras gramaticales mal construidas o directamente partes en las que puede que el lector no entienda lo que quieres decir. (Si no lo entiendes ni tú, ya es más serio… es posible que llegues a plantearte si te poseyó brevemente el demonio durante unos segundos cuando escribías esa frase).

Aún si no tienes un fallo que te haga plantearte si debes empezar a creer en fenómenos paranormales, siempre habrá detalles más pequeños. Por ejemplo, una palabra que te saltaste al escribir rápido, una falta de ortografía, un verbo mal conjugado, etc. En un examen, incluso estos fallos leves pueden ser la diferencia de puntos que te haga aprobar o suspender. En el mundo laboral pueden marcar la impresión que causes en tu lector.

3 consejos para mejorar la expresión escrita: Lee y escribe  📚 📝 

No hay formulas mágicas para escribir bien en inglés. Pero tanto si se tiene más facilidad para escribir como si te cuesta más, todo es dedicarle tiempo y esfuerzo. Si lees, irás absorbiendo consciente e incluso inconscientemente mucha información. Por ejemplo, los matices entre tiempos verbales, los empleos naturales de los conectores, vocabulario, cómo se escriben palabras que te hacían dudar o que escribías mal, etc. Eso sí, escoge siempre cosas asequibles según tu nivel y a ser posible que te interesen, ya sean novelas, noticias, blogs…

Por último, la mejor forma de aprender es poner todo en práctica. Para escribir bien hay que escribir. Así que incluso si tu profesora no te ha marcado ningún ejercicio de writing, siempre puedes pedirle en clase que te dé un tema para escribir. También puedes hacer alguno por tu cuenta.

Escribiendo, pondrás a prueba lo que sabes. También te darás cuenta de tus carencias para poder ponerle remedio. Y, cómo no, de los errores se aprende, y cometiéndolos se corrigen. Coge aire, siéntate, desperézate y ponte a escribir pensando activamente en lo que estás escribiendo y en si la persona que lo va a leer lo va a comprender bien. (Para casos de gandulismo extremo consulta también con tu profesor. Pero no descartes que te ataque con el Oxford English Dictionary para activarte 😝)

NikaTeacher interviews: Getting to know you, Nika

Sometimes in our team, we are all like ships passing in the night. We are busy bees and often don’t get chance to chat or catch up on gossip.  We decided to do a sequence of NikaTeacher interviews. So I pinned Nika down and asked her some questions about herself, I’m sure most of you are interested to know a little bit more about the Big Cheese.  Read on for some fascinating facts about our very own Nika.

NikaTeacher interviews: What’s your earliest memory? 

I think my earliest memory is skiing, or let’s say it more accurately, learning how to ski.

When I was young, my parents always took me to the Alps for a week or two where they would then teach me how to ski. My brother, who is 9 years older than me, was a professional skier and had coaches who taught him all the necessary techniques to be the best. I have always admired him and his abilities: he is so freaking good at any sports that I am never afraid of trying new things if he’s around.

On the other hand, I never had a proper teacher so I never achieved his level, but I’ve learnt it and had so much fun every winter going somewhere new with my family.

That’s actually how language works – you can learn on your own, but it’s much easier if you learn with a professional teacher who will guide you.

NikaTeacher interviews: What’s your greatest fear? 

This is a funny one! Did you know that I dream A LOT? Every morning I would be shaking my head and thinking: how on earth is it possible that I mixed up all the stories from the last two days and created a new one in my dreams. It’s hilarious, but sometimes also nerve-racking! So, I’ve often dreamt about a tsunami in Gran Canaria, and that’s basically my biggest fear: see a huge wave in front of me from which I can’t escape.

There was an earthquake in the Atlantic Ocean near Lisbon, Portugal in 1755. It was followed by a huge tsunami which almost totally destroyed the capital city of Portugal. Just saying.

NikaTeacher interviews: If you could go back in time, where would you go?

My parents will laugh on this one. Basically, I miss all these random things from my life in Slovenia. Random daily things that you usually don’t miss if you live in your own country. Since I have lived in a foreign country for around 7 years, I miss waking up on a Sunday morning and smelling whatever my parents are cooking in the kitchen because you have to eat at 12 o’clock on Sunday in Slovenia. We have never eaten out unless people didn’t fit in our house 😁My parents’ cuisine is extraordinary, so no one would rather eat out in a restaurant than at our house. I have already suggested they should write a book with all their recipes. So, sleep well and eat well, these are the two things I miss the most.

NikaTeacher interviews: How long have you lived in Gran Canaria?

It has been quite a long journey I think. When I moved to Gran Canaria in 2013 I had to start from scratch, without knowing what life was going to bring me. Sounds exciting, but to be honest, at the beginning it was very stressful, disappointing and sometimes even heart-breaking.

The journey has been tough, especially because you can’t just make new friends from one day to the other and people, as social beings, need to be surrounded by other people. I think that was the hardest part. Nowadays, I have amazing friends and I love sharing my points of view with my friend Aljosa from Slovenia, Adela from the Czech Republic, Yana from Russia, Justin from Zimbabwe and all the Spanish friends I made in the last few years.

And then, another chapter: building a business. I can speak about building and running a business another day. I can just tell you that we have finally received all the plans from our architect, so we’ll soon start working on our new project: one more space for learning in the same building, but on the first floor!

NikaTeacher interviews: Did you prefer learning English or Spanish? 

Oh, that’s super clear! S P A N I S H. 🇪🇸Do you want the truth? The best teacher I had for English was in primary school. This means that during 8 years, twice a week I enjoyed learning English.❤️After that, when I went to college, I started hating English because our teacher was basically an i***. I wasted 4 years of my life 2 or 3 times a week learning English without actually learning anything, it was a complete waste of time but luckily I knew quite a lot from before. Some years ago I even checked my English books and I don’t remember a page – bearing in mind that I’m a typical visual learning type, that’s a national catastrophe.

I’ve been learning Spanish for 4 years when I was chosen for a grant and I went to the University of Alcalá de Henares. I was absolutely inspired by my university professor Manuel. I spoke about him before and he is definitely the reason why I became a passionate language teacher myself.

When you learn from the best, you want to become the best for others. I appreciate all kinds of learning memories and experiences I have had in my life, so that I can now create the perfect place for others to learn. It has always worked like this, hasn’t it? Your experience is valuable if you know how and where to apply it.

NikaTeacher interviews: How do you relax?

How do I relax? I thought I relaxed reading, but then I realized I relax even more when I’m writing.

Have you ever written a diary about yourself, your feelings, your fears or your objectives? Omg, when I went home 2 years ago I found my old diaries – I have to say I was really consistent writing them. That’s probably why I enjoy writing blogs so much. I love this moment to myself and for you, our reader. I also relax having a cup of coffee in Starbucks or cooking and watching some Marie Forleo’s videos about how to run a business. That’s exactly what I’m going to do when I finish writing.

NikaTeacher interviews: Which living person do you admire?

Oprah, Beyoncé and Michelle Obama. They all went through a very difficult process of personal and professional growth and they never gave up. They persevered and eventually they became who they always wanted to be.

They should be a role model for all young women and men.

What’s your favourite English word?

Shiny.

And Spanish?

Libélula.

What’s your happiest memory?

Wow. That has to be Bali with my boyfriend.

How to get your Empadronamiento in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

Have you ever moved to ? for a few months? Do you know you have to let the authorities know that you live in that country? Here’s how I got my Empadronamiento in Las Palmas.

First things first

I moved to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria for a few months, so I needed to get a certificate for this situation at the municipal office. You’ll need it for many different things, but most probably to get discount for public transport in Spain, buy or sell a car, vote, apply for local health insurance, etc. This certificate is called Certificado de empadronamiento.

Now my friend, you might be asking yourself “How do I get one” Well, I’m the perfect person to describe what that process is all about, as I’ve failed miserably many times and presented wrong documents in the wrong places. But I got it in the end, so. And no, I’m not stupid. The problem is, I came to ? to learn Spanish and getting the certificate was one of the first things I had to do. And here, everything is in Spanish. Well, Canary Spanish, or to paint an even better picture, fast Canary Spanish. That’s why you might need some help.

Here’s a very funny video of how it feels to be part of Spanish paperwork procedures. And here are the most important 3 steps which will help you prepare for the fight.

Empadronamiento in Las Palmas step 1:  N. I. E. (Número de Identidad de Extranjero)

Firstly, you need to go to Policía Nacional to the Departamento Extranjería where you have to get your NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero or identification number for foreigners). The office hours are from 9 AM to 2 PM from Monday to Friday.

When you pass through the x-ray and the police officer asks you in Spanish where you need to go, you answer with: “Quería solicitar mi NIE”. The officer should direct you to “Extranjería” which is the department where you get your papers when you’re a foreigner. The NIE document also states, that you’re not a resident. If you need to get the residency, then Policía Nacional is not the right place.

After, you have to wait on a long bench. You might ask: “Quién es el último” before you sit down to find out who’s last in line, because it’s a mess there. Usually, the people either raise a hand to signal it, but if they say “Ustedes” or “Tú” or “Vosotros” it means you’re next. When you finally get attended to you might say something like: “Buenos días, quería solicitar el NIE” which means “I’d like to get my NIE“.

Also, they will ask you for these documents:

  • a copy of ID (DNI) or passport (pasaporte) → they will take this
  • the real ID card or passport for proof
  • a copy of your rental contract (contrato de alquiler) →  you get this back
  • a copy of a signed Learning Agreement if you’re an Erasmus student or a signed employment contract (contrato de trabajo) → they will take this

Furthermore, after presenting all these documents, you’ll have to put some information on a form they give you. You can ask for help to complete it. In the end, you will get a piece of paper with your information. MAKE SURE ALL INFORMATION IS CORRECT.  Sometimes, the employees are sloppy and they don’t care about how they fill in the form with your data. In the end, they hand you some more papers.

Empadronamiento in Las Palmas step 2: bank & Policía Nacional

Finally, you’re done with the first step when you receive the papers. Now, you have to pay for the service at a bank (“banco”). Find a bank nearby. Make sure it’s open, so that you can do everything in one day. When you’re done with this part, remember, you still need to get your NIE paper. Then, you have to return to the Policía Nacional building, get attended to again and hand them the papers with the bill saying you paid for it. Only then will they give you the paper with your NIE.

Empadronamiento in Las Palmas step 3: Ayuntamiento

Now you have your NIE and you have to present it at the municipal office.  In Spanish they call it Ayuntamiento. You need to get an appointment (cita previa) to be seen. To do it online (much quicker) click here: Ayuntamiento de Las Palmas  and do the following.

  • Fill in the necessary data
  • Select the address of the municipality office you want to go to
  • Select the date and hour to be seen
  • Print out the paper they send you to present it at the office for your appointment

➡️When the day comes, make sure you prepared all the papers, like the girl in the video did. Here’s the list of the documents you’ll need to present to the agent at the desk:

  • (the paper for your “cita previa”)
  • your NIE → you get this back
  • a copy of your passport or ID card →  you get this back
  • the real document ID card or passport for proof
  • a copy of your rental contract →  you get this back
  • a copy of the rent payment for the current month → you get this back

In the Ayuntamiento

Finally, when you arrive to the Ayuntamiento building follow these little steps:

  1. First, take out the paper you printed for your “cita previa” and go to one of the small machines
  2. Then, you’ll have to write either the number of the printed document or the number of your ID in the machine
  3. After, select “imprimir” in the machine to print out the little paper with which you wait in line to get an agent
  4. In the end, when your number appears on the screen you’ll get the information of which desk will deal with you

The agent at the desk will ask you for the documents below. Furthermore, they will give you a form to fill in your data. If you need help, just ask them as there’s some specific information about the municipality you’ll have to write.

And finally, if everything’s ok, they will hand you what you came for: your Empadronamiento in Las Palmas.

Mis 5 prioridades (¡y todas empiezan por la letra C!)

Abril es un mes en el cual las cosas van bien encaminadas. La gente ya empieza a pensar en los planes de verano (¡nosotros también tendremos uno magnífico para ti en breve!) y aprovecha los días largos, en Gran Canaria normalmente soleados, para ir a tomarse un café en una terraza con sus amigos.

Cada individuo sabe cómo le gusta pasar el tiempo y cuáles son sus prioridades. Siempre cuando me voy de vacaciones, intento desconectar lo máximo posible y eso normalmente me trae momentos de calma en los cuales realmente tengo tiempo para pensar en las mías (prioridades).

Una de nuestras prioridades son nuestros alumnos. Nuestros alumnos son aquellas personas con las cuales establecemos una conexión muy profunda y duradera. Creemos que uno aprende mucho mejor cuando está en un núcleo de personas conocidas como son nuestros grupos reducidos. Sentir conexión acelera el proceso de aprendizaje (por supuesto hay que ponerle ganas y trabajar duro aparte). Yo nunca hubiera empezado a querer tanto la gramática y la enseñanza, si no hubiera sentido esta conexión maravillosa con mi profesor Manuel.

Yo siempre lo decía y sigo subrayándolo dentro del equipo: si no sabes algo, pregunta. Nunca hagas cosas porque sí. Deberías conocer la razón por la que lo haces y eso se reflejará luego en el trabajo hecho. Muchas veces hay una cadena de tareas que se tiene que cumplir para que el trabajo esté bien hecho, es decir, cada persona tiene que hacer bien su parte para poder progresar como equipo. 

Y a nivel de la escuela de idiomas como tal, me encantan las colaboraciones. Este año colaboramos con las Universidades de Eslovenia y sus estudiantes Erasmus).

A pesar de la cantidad de trabajo que a veces se acumula, tenemos que entender la diferencia entre hacer por hacer y hacer con cariño.

Siempre se pueden buscar formas de hacer las cosas mejor. Para ello existen cursos de gestión de tiempo, cursos de idiomas, cursos de marketing, etc. En los cursos que organizamos en nuestro centro, a parte de aprender del libro, aprenderás de las profesoras, cuya vocación es enseñar. Además, al sentir que tu profesor/a no solo es especialista en lo que hace, sino que disfruta con su trabajo, podrás aprender con mucha más facilidad.

Como en la vida. Prestar atención a lo positivo, en las características positivas que te determinan. Como ya sabes: la gente siempre encontrará algo para criticar. Y los que critican, no están contentos consigo mismo.

Por ello: ¡a disfrutar de lo que somos y nunca dejar de aprender!

3 consejos para mejorar la comprensión auditiva (niveles A1-A2)

Cómo mejorar la comprensión auditiva? Si aprendes un idioma, te habrás visto alguna vez en la situación de escuchar un audio en clase, o intentar ver alguna película en versión original y… ¡encontrarte con que lo que escuchas parece una única palabra gigante que no eres capaz de descomponer! A veces logras comprender palabras sueltas, pero o bien no logras obtener la suficiente información para comprender el mensaje, o bien… ¡te inventas tu propio mensaje con las palabras sueltas! Es un problema muy normal y frecuente. Pero, como el resto de dificultades en el aprendizaje de los idiomas, se puede trabajar y superar.

En clase, escuchas a tu profesor, al resto de compañeros si tienes clases en grupo, y haces ejercicios de listening, pero la comprensión auditiva es una habilidad que se adquiere con el tiempo y la exposición al idioma. Por tanto, a veces será necesario continuar desarrollando esta competencia fuera del aula. Aquí te proponemos tres sugerencias de cómo llevar esto a cabo.

Cómo mejorar la comprensión auditiva: Escoge bien el material

Este paso es muy importante para mejorar la comprensión auditiva. Cuando estás en nivel básico (A1-A2) es esencial que escojas bien el material que vas a utilizar. Si intentas practicar con algo que esté por encima de tu nivel, puedes llegar a frustrarte rápido de tener la sensación de que no comprendes. En estas alturas de tu aprendizaje puedes probar con una o varias de las cosas de esta lista:

  • Películas o series que conozcas en tu lengua materna y que tengan un lenguaje general, no muy complicado y donde los personajes hablen con claridad. Las películas de dibujos pueden ser una buena opción.
  • Vídeos/podcasts/ejercicios que encuentres en la web (Youtube) que estén ordenados por niveles. Escoge tu nivel, y si te resulta muy difícil, no dudes en empezar con material de un nivel más básico.
  • Libros adaptados con CD. Existen también libros adaptados organizados por niveles para los estudiantes de idiomas. Puedes probar a ponerte el CD después de haber leído la historia. Si ya la conoces y has trabajado el vocabulario, te será más fácil extraer el sentido de las palabras que escuchas.

Cómo mejorar la comprensión auditiva: Escucha mientras lees… pero siempre con subtítulos en inglés

Tanto con películas como con cualquier otro tipo de material este es un ejercicio muy bueno para ayudarte a mejorar la comprensión auditiva. Por eso es importante que siempre pongas los subtítulos en inglés. Además, seamos realistas: si los pones en español, es muy probable que después de unos minutos te des cuenta de que ya no estás prestando atención a lo que oyes, sino a lo que lees.

Cómo mejorar la comprensión auditiva: Dale prioridad a la frecuencia y no a la cantidad

Escuchar en una lengua extranjera exige más concentración y esfuerzo. Por lo que es importante que sepas también cuando parar. Es importante que te expongas al inglés, pero sin que te resulte demasiado cansado. Por ello es mejor que practiques menos tiempo pero con regularidad (a ser posible cada día) a que un día acabes agotado y después no vuelvas a practicar hasta dentro de un mes.

Regrets, I’ve had a few

When I was a teenager, I asked my mum to dye my hair blonde, I’m a natural brunette so you can imagine how ridiculous I looked!  It was a home colouring kit, so I ended up with yellow hair!  I had to go to school the next day and was mortified.  Luckily by the weekend I was back to my normal colour again thanks to another home colouring kit (my hair was, by then, like straw).  So, I wish I hadn’t coloured my hair and I wish my mother had refused to colour my hair (remember these examples if you want to take Cambridge B2 exam :)).

The I wish structure

If you are learning English or taking the Cambridge B2 Exam, you will need to know how to use the I wish structure, this is for things that happened or didn’t happen in the past. 

Have a look at the sentence, I wish I hadn’t coloured my hair, I wish + past perfect (I hadn’t) + clause.  This is something that had happened but I wish it hadn’t happened. If something hadn’t happened in the past and we regret it, I wish I had listened to my teacher more, e.g. I didn’t listen to my teacher.

I wish I hadn’t eaten all that chocolate (=I ate too much chocolate).

I wish I had seen you last night (=I didn’t see you last night).

It drives me mad!

When someone or something is annoying us, we use the following structure.  I wish the neighbours would be quiet (they are very noisy).  I wish the bus would come (the bus is late).  This is used for anybody or anything, other than ourselves, that we want to change.  I wish + person / thing would / wouldn’t + present simple.

You drive too fast; I wish you wouldn’t drive too fast.

It won’t stop raining; I wish it would stop raining.

This structure is super easy and super useful for language learners.

I wish I was a little bit taller

If we want to make changes which may be impossible or unlikely, we use I wish + past simple,

eg I wish I could win the lottery (I am never going to win the lottery), I wish my parents lived here (they live in the UK and won’t move to Gran Canaria), I wish I was naturally blonde (I have brown hair) or I wish I wasn’t frightened of spiders (I’m petrified of spiders).

So here are my regrets, annoyances and impossible wishes….

  • I wish I had listened to my maths teacher (I’m terrible at maths).
  • I wish people wouldn’t look at the mobiles when they are walking in the street.  (They bump into me!)
  • I wish I wasn’t scared of my boyfriend’s driving (I’m a very nervous passenger)

Switch from dubbing to subbing

“I wish I spoke great English. It would make my life so much easier. But I can’t practice it, so I guess I’m stuck.”

If this thought popped up in your mind at least once in your life, then you’re reading the right blog post today. We’re going to talk about a special way how to learn English step by step Las Palmas without speaking it – that is watching films.

A DUBBING CULTURE

Spain is a big country and every foreign film is dubbed. This means that Spanish actors do voiceovers of English speaking actors who are protagonists in a film. And if you want to hear a different language or a different accent it’s just not going to happen by itself. That’s why you have to watch a film in its original English version, if you want to learn English.

“Oh that’s just horrible. I can’t listen to my fav character speaking with a funny English voice.”

I know it’s very confusing and annoying when you hear your favourite character speak in their original language and not in Spanish. Been there, done that, as I live next to Italy and they also have a dubbing culture. You must let yourself go and just follow the storyline. This is a great experience, because you can see the film with different eyes, from a different perspective and you can connect to the characters in a different way.

If you watch films in English you learn about these 4 things without even trying hard:

  • How the voice goes up and down in English depending on the phrase they say, whether it is a statement, a question or an order
  • American or British accent. The character’s accent can tell you where they’re from and how they pronounce words
  • The vocabulary they use in a film is related to the environment where the scene takes place. You learn how people speak in a store, at a concert, when they’re with friends and family and so on
  • The element of culture is always present and you can learn about the holidays, events, beliefs and customs that are typical for an English speaking country

Learn English step by step Las Palmas

Watching films is for all English learners, because it doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or not. There are always two things you’d want to do to learn English step by step Las Palmas

1.) Pick the film you want to see in English

and

2.) add Spanish SUBTITLES

This will help you learn whole phrases if you’re a beginner and new vocabulary if you’re not a beginner anymore. Think about it, you read the subtitles and at the same time you listen to what the characters are saying.

If you’re a beginner, I know our idea can sound like preparations for going to Mars, but you can choose a short part of a film and replay it if you want. Make sure you pick a very interesting film, because it will be easy to follow the storyline – you’ll want to know how it ends and why things happened as they did.

When you feel like you understand a lot of what’s going on then you don’t need subtitles anymore. And I’m sure that you’ll be so much better at speaking English, too!

TAKE ACTION

The last step I can help you with, is to give you examples of films that could be interesting to you. I know we all have different taste and preferences, so here are just a few options, because English films are easy to find.

3 tips to answer THE question: Am I ready to take the exam?

Are you preparing for a specific exam? If you are, then most probably this question will come to your mind: Am I ready to take the exam? Today we bring you 3 tips to answer this question.?

Tip 1: Think objectively about your skills and weaknesses

It’s important to get to know your own abilities in relation to the exam. When you’re in one of our exam preparation classes, everything your teacher prepares for you will help you acquire knowledge and skills which will be evaluated in your exams.

If you’ve been taking an exam class for some time, you’ve probably found yourself in the situation where you’ve been taught something (a grammatical structure, a verb tense, vocabulary…), you’ve understood it and done your exercises correctly, but later on  you didn’t remember it or you made mistakes when you tried to use it!

This probably means that you haven’t yet fully assimilated that lesson. If this happens to you often, it might mean you need to revise what you’ve learnt in depth and keep practicing before you take the exam. You need to keep practicing what you learn in class so you won’t forget it and you’ll be ready to take the exam.

If you don’t have problems with what you’ve learned and you feel you have a good grasp of the contents you’ve been taught, congrats! But even so, you can check the following tips number 2 and 3 .

Tip 2: Practice exams to get ready to take the exam

After you do an objective auto-evaluation you might feel a few things. You can feel prepared for your exam or unsure of what to think about your skills and weaknesses. If you’re not feeling confident, you can ask your teacher to give you an exam to try at home.

If you’re getting good grades and you practice exams at home, it’s clearly a good sign! It’s very important to identify where you went wrong and correct those mistakes. For example, if you’ve made a mistake building or identifying a conditional sentence and you’ve already leaned this in class, go back to your notes and work on the lesson a bit more. Make sure to always ask your teacher if you’ve got doubts or if there’s anything you don’t understand.

When your practice exams are turning out well, then it’s time for you to take a mock exam. The mock exam is like a practice exam, but you take it in our school under exam conditions: you get the exact timing as in the real exam, you write in silence and with no help. This will give you a clear picture how you function in exam conditions.

Tip 3: Ask your teacher for advice to be ready to take the exam

Our final tip is to ask your teacher for advice. We work with you, we see your progress and we’ll be able to advise you. If we think you aren’t ready yet, we can help you see what to improve. If we think you are ready, remember we help you throughout the whole inscription process.

2 tácticas para memorizar palabras nuevas en inglés

Memorizar palabras nuevas es un proceso que siempre tiene lugar cuando aprendes un nuevo idioma. En el blog de hoy quiero hablar sobre dos mnemotécnicas que me encantan y que llevo usando desde que empecé a aprender idiomas en la secundaria.

La RAE (=Real Academia de la lengua española) indica:

MNEMOTECNICA 1. f. Procedimiento de asociación mental para facilitar el recuerdo de algo.

Pues, como pedagoga he tenido que estudiar y poner en práctica muchas otras mnemotécnicas, pero hoy les voy a hablar de dos que mejor se me dan:

1. Para memorizar palabras nuevas: Invéntate una historia

Imagínate que la profesora te ha enseñado hoy 2 expresiones, 3 phrasal verbs y 7 palabras nuevas sueltas. La clase ha sido bastante completita, ¿a qué sí? Lo bueno es que lo has entendido todo y que no tienes ningún problema con las traducciones. El arte de la siguiente clase será: qué alumno del grupo va a ser capaz de usar todo este vocabulario nuevo.

Tu proceso mental

  1. ¿Qué vocabulario es nuevo para mí?
  2. Como soy consciente del número 1, puedo pensar en cómo usarlo todo en una historia

La historia a) nos la puedes pasar por correo o b) entregársela a tu profesora. Puedes unir también las expresiones de la clase anterior, realmente lo único importante es que subrayes las palabras que son nuevas para ti. Así también memorizas con más facilidad si eres tipo visual y desde que veas el texto la próxima vez te acordarás de lo más importante.

2. Para memorizar palabras nuevas: Busca palabras que suenan de forma similar

Con los nombres propios Canarios que nunca he escuchado, tengo los mismos problemas que con cualquier palabra nueva que tengo que aprender. Tengo que admitir que memorizar no es lo mío. Entonces, siempre intento buscar alguna palabra muy similar en cualquier idioma que conozca. Un ejemplo de ello es lo que me pasó esta semana. Me hizo mucha gracia pero me servirá para enseñarte de lo que te hablo

Uno de mis alumnos se llama Adejare (nombre guanche). Pues, lo típico, una persona que aprende una lengua extranjera puede intentar memorizar la palabra nueva, buscando otra que se parezca a ella). Nombres un poco parecidos: Adel. Bueno, por mucho que intentes este no sirve porque es un nombre de chica y además, no contiene la jota y realmente no ayuda. Luego, otra palabra parecida que ya he escuchado: Adeje. Es un pueblo en Tenerife: ya esto suena más parecido: Adeje – Adejare ? Creo que durante la clase tuve que mirar unas 10 veces el nombre en el listado y leerlo pero por lo menos me acordaba de las primeras dos sílabas y la jota (A-de-j…).

Durante este proceso de memorización también los alumnos vieron que nadie aprende palabras nuevas en un pispás, ni su profesora. De hecho, estoy escribiendo este ejemplo para no cometer el error mañana cuando vuelva a la clase.

Ejemplo bonus

Otro ejemplo para memorizar palabras nuevas que suelo compartir en clase:

¿Cómo se dice “billete” (no moneda) en inglés? Hay un modelo del coche Nissan que tiene el mismo nombre ? YUKE, QUASQUAI?

NO! Se llama NOTE ☺ Billete = note.

Para terminar, puedo invitarte a que me envíes historias incluyendo las palabras nuevas – me encantará leerlas. Y, además, no dudes en buscar palabras similares, con la misma raíz o que te suenen a ti igual. No importa lo que dicen los demás: Si a ti Adeje y Adejare no se te parecen, no pasa nada. Sin embargo, a lo mejor tienes otro ejemplo sobre cómo aprendiste una palabra en concreto y con ello podrías ayudar a otros alumnos de inglés o español.
